Lumbini, Nepal, November 11, 2024 – In a significant step towards promoting Buddhist studies and fostering research on peace and sustainable development, Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU) and South Asia Foundation-Nepal (SAFN) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish the South Asia Centre for Peace Research and Sustainable Development, SAF-Nepal. The MoA was formally signed by Prof. Dr. Subarna Lal Bajracharya, Vice Chancellor of Lumbini Buddhist University, and Rahul Barua, Honorary General of the South Asia Foundation.
This new Centre, located in Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, will serve as a resource and research hub for academic initiatives aimed at exploring the life and teachings of Buddha and their relevance in modern contexts. The Centre will strengthen Lumbini’s role as an international academic hub, attracting scholars, students, and visitors worldwide.
Objectives and Key Features of the Centre
The Centre’s mission is to deepen global understanding of Buddha’s teachings on peace, harmony, and human integrity. The objectives include promoting joint research, academic collaboration, and scholarly exchanges between LBU, SAFN, and other institutions, as well as establishing a state-of-the-art facility with resources for study and research.
The partnership is set to open doors for collaborative research and academic programs, positioning Lumbini as a global focal point for Buddhist studies and sustainable development. LBU and SAFN plan to work with international institutions to advance these goals, integrating modern digital resources and organizing academic programs in collaboration with prominent universities and research organizations.
