Special Course on Buddhist Studies Successfully Organized by Lumbini Buddhist University

Lumbini, the sacred land chosen by the Buddha as his birthplace, is eternally etched with the profound teachings of the Tathagata. This serene and spiritually rich location recently became the backdrop for a mindful academic endeavor organized by Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU). Dedicated to propagating the timeless teachings of the Buddha from his birthplace to the world, LBU successfully conducted a special course on Buddhist studies from March 1 to 3, 2023.

The Faculty of Buddhist Studies at LBU designed this unique course to share the life-enriching teachings of the Buddha with a global audience. The program attracted 26 participants from various corners of the world, all eager to immerse themselves in the wisdom of the Buddha. The course was led by dedicated faculty members who delivered the long-preserved teachings of the Buddha to enthusiastic students.

Day 1: Welcoming Session and Introduction to Buddhist Practices

The first day began with a warm welcoming session chaired by the respected Vice Chancellor, Dr. Subarnalal Bajracharya. He extended a heartfelt welcome to the Venerable Nun Jiu Mei and students, emphasizing the significance of Lumbini as the birthplace of the Buddha. Dr. Manik Ratna Shakya, Dean of Faculty of Buddhist Studies, introduced the participants to LBU’s legacy, tracing its establishment back to the mandate of the World Buddhist Summit held in Lumbini in 1998. The session concluded with the welcoming of the participants through Khadas.

The first academic session took place at the Prajna Stupa, located on the central campus premises, where sacred relics of the Tathagata are enshrined. Dr. Manik Ratna Shakya led a practical class on the Guru Yoga meditation system, a practice preserved and nurtured in the Buddhism of Nepalmandala. Following this, he guided the participants in a walking meditation session (Chankramana Dhyana) around the stupa. This mindful walking meditation, deeply rooted in Buddhist tradition, serves as an effective way to integrate the Buddha’s teachings into daily life. The day concluded with an introductory session on the core teachings of the Buddha, focusing on mindfulness and compassion.

Day 2: Exploring Lumbini’s Sacred Heritage

The second day commenced with a fascinating lecture by renowned archaeologist Prof. Basanta Bidari, who delved into the history of Lumbini. Through Buddhist literature and archaeological findings, Prof. Bidari transported the participants to the past, highlighting the sacredness and significance of Lumbini. His session instilled a deep sense of gratitude and eagerness in the students to explore the birthplace of the Buddha.

The next session was a sacred Buddha Puja held at the Mayadevi Temple. Dr. Manik Ratna Shakya introduced the participants to the temple, while Assistant Professor Dayanidhi Gautam provided insights into Lumbini’s significance through Buddhist literature. Venerable Vajira led the students in the puja, which included taking refuge in the Triple Gem, observing the Five Precepts, and chanting the Dhammachakkapavattana Sutta. Venerable Vajira also delivered a sermon on the Buddha’s first teaching, based on the Dhammachakkapavattana Sutta.

The participants, filled with devotion, offered colorful prayer flags at the sacred garden and performed three circumambulations of the Mayadevi Temple. They then visited the temple and the exact birthplace of the Buddha, an experience that left a lasting impression on their hearts.

Later in the day, Assistant Lecturer Dayaram Bhandari led an interactive session on mental health and well-being, emphasizing the Buddhist approach to mindfulness and peace. His pragmatic teachings highlighted how Buddhist practices can lead to a balanced and harmonious life.

Day 3: Meditation and Digital Integration

The final day began with a mindfulness session led by Dr. Nyima Sherpa, Head of the Department of Bhot Buddhist Studies. Dr. Sherpa introduced the participants to Buddhist meditation practices, emphasizing their philosophical foundations. The session was highly interactive, with participants’ questions about integrating Buddhist teachings into daily life being thoughtfully addressed.

Following this, IT expert Mr. Rabin Panthi conducted a session on the digital services provided by LBU. He demonstrated the university’s admission portal, offering live guidance to the participants on how to navigate it effectively.

Closing Ceremony: A New Chapter in Buddhist Education

The closing ceremony was held at the university’s auditorium, chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr. Subarnalal Bajracharya. The event was graced by the presence of a venerable master from the meditation center, along with Dr. Tilakram Acharya (Registrar), Dr. Manik Ratna Shakya (Dean, Faculty of Buddhist Studies), and Dr. Gitu Giri (Director of the Research Department).

Dr. Shakya provided an overview of the academic programs offered by LBU and expressed his gratitude to the venerable teachers and participants. Dr. Acharya highlighted the university’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for linguistic and cultural diversity. Dr. Bajracharya congratulated the participants on successfully completing the course and announced the establishment of a Buddhist Study Center in California as an academic branch of LBU.

The linguistic diversity of the participants was seamlessly bridged by Dr. Sagar Neupane, who diligently translated all sessions between English and Chinese. His efforts ensured that language barriers were transformed into connections of understanding.

Conclusion: A Milestone in Buddhist Education

The special course on Buddhist studies marked a significant milestone in LBU’s mission to propagate the Buddha’s teachings globally. Through the dedication of the participants and the tireless efforts of the faculty, staff, and officials, this event has opened new avenues for sharing the Buddha’s wisdom with the world. May this humble endeavor continue to enrich lives and spread the light of the Dharma from Lumbini to every corner of the globe.
