Japan Donates 183 Books to Lumbini Buddhist University on World Book Day

A grand book handover ceremony was held at the Central Library of Lumbini Buddhist University to mark the occasion of World Book Day, celebrating the deepening educational and cultural relations between Nepal and Japan.

Under the READ JAPAN PROJECT, The Nippon Foundation formally donated 183 books to the university. The collection spans a wide range of subjects, including Japanese history, politics, culture, literature, economy, international relations, social structures, and contemporary issues. Published by world-renowned publishers, these books are expected to serve as valuable resources for students, faculty, and researchers engaged in Japan-related studies.

The ceremony was chaired by Dr. Manik Ratna Shakya, Dean of the Faculty of Buddhist Studies, and graced by the distinguished presence of His Excellency Mr. Maeda Toro, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, who served as the event’s Guest of Honor. Dr. Tilakram Acharya, Registrar of Lumbini Buddhist University, attended as the Chief Guest.

During the formal handover, Ambassador Maeda emphasized the significance of academic exchanges, stating, “Book handover is an exchange of knowledge. Events like this help to deepen the academic and cultural ties between two nations.”

Dr. Acharya highlighted the longstanding educational and diplomatic relationship between Nepal and Japan. He remarked, “Initiatives like the READ JAPAN PROJECT are believed to institutionally strengthen the educational and friendly ties between the two countries.”

Dean Dr. Shakya, delivering his address in Japanese, expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Japan and the Embassy for their generous contribution. He acknowledged Japan’s significant role in advancing Buddhist studies and emphasized that such support would offer expanded research opportunities for Nepali students.

The event also welcomed the special presence of Mr. Noel Haar and Mr. Yasuyuki Yokoyama, First Secretaries at the Embassy of Japan, along with Mr. Rahish Shrestha, a research scholar. Dr. Sharada Poudel, Chief Librarian of the Central Library, delivered the welcome address, expressing appreciation to all contributors and affirming that the newly received resources would elevate the university’s stature on the global academic platform.

The ceremony was attended by senior university officials, faculty members, staff, and students, with proceedings conducted by Assistant Professor Mr. Sanjay Shakya.

Lumbini Buddhist University has pledged to ensure that the donated books are readily accessible to students, faculty, and researchers through its Central Library. The university believes that these resources will bolster its academic excellence, enhance research endeavors, and promote international collaboration.
