2081/082 The Buddhist Stone Relief Depictions of Trio in Nepal Mandala: Its Implication for Buddhist Art History and Inscriptional Significance

उपप्रा.सञ्जय शाक्य

Abstract:

Buddhist depictions of Trio composed of Buddha and Bodhisattvas are the common traditions. The sixth-century stone Buddhist relief in situ in Pātan, Yaņgubāha (Image no. 1) is composed of Buddha at the center and two bodhisattvas namely Padmapāṇī and Vajrapāṇī on either side of him. This common fashion seemed replicated in Bhaktapur (Image no. 3). Interestingly enough, Yaņgubāha has an inscription on its base “Jaladroņī“. The interesting discovery so far is that the iconographic depiction in this relief is very common to that of ancient Indian caves like Ajantā, Ellora, Karle, etc. We have discovered three of its kind installed in Nepal that could date for the same period. In this sense, their antiquity referencing from the inscription and art historical approach are worth exploration. The enigmatic stone relief has an impression of Cave art. This could link Nepalese art and culture with Indian tradition in some way that relates art, Philosophy, and culture. The mentioning of Bhikşuņi Saṅgha (Female Monastics), “Caturvimsati Mahāyānapratipannaya Bhikşuņi Saṅgha” (Influx of female monastics from Mahāyāna tradition) were testimonials for the existence of female ordained sangha. Not only that but also they are very active in terms of their practices as well. This particular specimen could connect the artistic and traditional practices in India. It could be ambitious to say those female ordained were coming from India for now but their possible traces could be explored from this relief. It will also explore the availability and status of female monastics in Nepal from other stone inscriptions that include words like female monastics and their endowments. The research will also correlate and interpret the Yaņgubāha inscription from the references of other inscriptions discovered in the licchavi period………………..

2081/082 Transcending Death Anxiety through Virtue and Contemplation on Impermanence: A Study through Buddhist Perspective

सहा.प्रा.दयाराम भण्डारी

Abstract:

The research proposal, on the title: Transcending Death Anxiety through virtue and Contemplation on Impermanence explores the profound and universal fear of death that spreads through human consciousness. Humans fear death simply because they don’t know what is there after heart ceases beating. Materialists believe that death is the end of everything (including consciousness or Self). Hindus and Buddhists have different opinion. They believe that humans get pushed to hell or other lowly realm based on their Karma. The study aims a thorough investigation on the nature and causes of the death-fear, as well as explores the possibility of transcending it through the application of Buddhist teachings and practices. This research examines the underlying psychological and existential factors that contribute to death anxiety. It will critically analyze how cultural, religious, and philosophical narratives shape our understanding of death and influence the fear. The objective of this research is to notify the academicians about the technique of overcoming death via the practice of morality and realization of Impermanence.  Library based qualitative data analysis technique is employed to accomplish the research project…………

2078/079 Buddhism in the West (With reference to Nepalese Buddhist Diaspora in the UK)

Puspa Bahadur Gurung

Abstract

This mini research mainly concentrates on overview of Nepalese Buddhist Diaspora in the UK in the context of Western Buddhism. Starting mainly with the etymology, interpretation and arrival of Buddhism in the western world, it deals with Buddhism in Western perspective in relation to its globalization and transformation. In the context of etymological interpretation, Buddhism is a single religion which is known by various names representing people, culture and geodiversity. Although the history of Western Buddhism is very new, the first westerners to become Buddhists were Greeks who settled in Bactria and India during the Hellenistic period. They became influential figures during the reigns of the Indo-Greco kings, whose patronage of Buddhism led to the emergence of Greco Buddhism and Greco Buddhist art. During the Middle Ages the contact between the Western and Buddhist cultures were almost not at all but from the early modern period, global trade and mercantilism, navigation technology was developed and the European colonization of Asian Buddhist countries led to increased knowledge of Buddhism among Westerners.  Further contact with Buddhists from Asia by way of immigration various Buddhist institutions were established and prominent scholars contributed to the expansion, growth and dissemination of Buddhism there. Anagarika Dharmapala is a praiseworthy figure in Sri Lanka. He is regarded as a nationalist hero who drove monks toward political involvement and ethnic confrontation…………
