The Ph.D. program in Buddhist Studies at Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU) is designed to offer an advanced and comprehensive exploration into various aspects of Buddhism. This 18-credit hour course aims to meet the rigorous academic and research requisites necessary for students pursuing a doctoral degree. The curriculum encompasses advanced research methodologies alongside core Buddhist Studies, which include the history of Buddhism, Buddhist philosophy, literature, art, iconography, architecture, and contemporary Buddhist subjects. Through this program, students will develop a profound understanding and research skills in these areas, preparing them for scholarly investigation and specialization in diverse fields of Buddhist Studies.

Course Overview
Each course will be evaluated against 100 marks for core subjects like philosophy, history, art and architecture and Research Methodology. Each subject carrying 3 Credit Hours is divided into 60:40 percents for the gradation purpose under the GPA system. The students should appear a 60 marks term-end examination to be undertaken by the LBU. The remaining 40 marks will be allocated for internal evaluation that includes internal examination, attendance, class performance, etc. The internal evaluation will be based on constant monitoring by the supervisor and the teachers using specified tools.

Evaluation Scheme
The students are expected to have a minimum of 80 percent attendance to appear in the term-end examination. The internal examination carrying 40 marks will be awarded upon the evaluation by the subject teacher and field supervisors. The students, who fail to secure minimum required marks are considered as disqualified for appearing in the term-end examination.
In course of internal evaluation of the students, they are assigned to write a term paper by the subject teachers on the basis of the course contents. The students are evaluated on the basis of their attendance in the class, application of their theoretical knowledge and skills in field works and their reflections. The supervisors will closely supervise each student allotted to them and guide them accordingly for fieldwork practice. The students are required to bear all the cost incurred during the fieldwork practices that includes placement, research, block, and work camps on their own.
Grading (General Provisions)
The students must meet minimum requirment of class attendance for a course completion along with all the requisites of assignments, theory and practical work to secure a passing grade. The students will be primarily evaluated using a numerical which will be later replaced in letter grades. The minimum pass marks will be 50 and the passing grade will be “C”.
