The Master’s Degree by Dissertation (MDD) is a two-year master’s program emphasizing independent research. Students develop an original research topic under the supervision of a dedicated academic advisor. The program concludes with the mandatory submission of two published articles, followed by the submission of the dissertation.

SPECIALIZATIONS OFFERED

Research topics must align with LBU’s academic priorities. Focus areas include:

  • Buddhist Philosophy and Ethics
  • Buddhist Art and Architecture
  • Buddhist Psychology and Literature
  • Applied Buddhism in Life and Leadership
  • Spirituality, Meditation, Culture, and History

Each area explores how traditional teachings inform modern contexts.

 WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Applicants from diverse academic, professional, and contemplative backgrounds are encouraged to apply especially those with a commitment to critical inquiry, reflective research, and academic engagement in Buddhist studies.

 

Recommended applicants:

  • Monks, nuns, and spiritual leaders
  • Educators, counselors, and wellness professionals
  • Career changers and lifelong learners
  • Candidates from any faith or cultural background interested in Buddhist studies

There is no upper age limit. Prior formal Buddhist education is not required.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution (Second Division or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated academic interest in Buddhist studies or related interdisciplinary fields
  • Readiness for independent, research-driven scholarly work

Required Documents (in this order)

  • Bachelor’s Degree Certificate and academic transcripts
  • Research Proposal (1,500-2,000 words)
  • Copy of valid passport or national ID
  • Bio-data or résumé
  • Two recent passport-size color photographs

 

ADMISSION PROCESS:

  1. Document review by the academic team
  2. Online interview with program faculty
  3. Final offer letter with admission confirmation
