The program trains students to become fully qualified Sowa Rigpa physicians. The first 4.5 years will be classroom-based, followed by one year of clinical internship with senior doctors. Core Sowa Rigpa courses will follow tradition, taught by with highly qualified Sowa Rigpa doctors at a level equivocal to Sowa Rigpa medical programs in Tibet and India. However, this college is unique in that it also incorporates additional training in as essential aspects of modern medicine necessary for an effective clinical practice in the modern world.

English is the primary medium of study. As the subject and source materials and are all in Tibetan, there will also be a strong emphasis on developing fluency in classical Tibetan language. The BSRMS degree is accredited through Lumbini Buddhist University, and offers a degree recognized in Nepal and by educational institutions worldwide.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

The general objectives of the Bachelor in Sowa Rigpa Medicine & Surgery (BSRMS) course are to:

  1. Cultivate a community of learned physicians and professors with an in-depth knowledge of Sowa Rigpa medicine.
  2. Produce human resources for health services, education, and research.
  3. Provide health services through different branch clinics and medical camps.
  4. Conduct research in Sowa Rigpa medicine.
  5. Preserve rare species of plants, animals, insects, and so forth; creating ethical and sustainable methods to use these species medicinally.
  6. Create a world-class education and training program in Sowa Rigpa that is continuously improved and refined.
  7. Put effort into maintaining ecological balance for the Earth and Nepal.

The aim of this course is to produce socially responsible and competent physicians who are willing and able to meet the existing and emerging challenges of national and international healthcare needs and systems. Furthermore, these practitioners should be able to address the causes of diseases and treat problems from the root level. They will learn to consider disease from a wider perspective, taking in account all relevant conditions such as environment, diet, lifestyles, spiritual growth and so forth that have caused the individual a certain kind of disorder. Students will develop confidence in communication skills, health-care systems, managing emergencies, and ritual practices.

Admissions Requirements

  • Completion of High School (+2) or CTEVT (vocational skill training), including Biology.
  • English language fluency
  • Basic Tibetan language, including ability to read and write the Tibetan script

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Admissions open for the new batch of the BSRMS program every year from May to June 1st Week. Courses begin on August 3rd Week.

The College will conduct an entrance exam on June 2nd Week.

*Any students weak in English or Tibetan will join a language-intensive bridge course.

The college campus lies a short walk behind the Boudhanath Stupa, one of the holiest places in Kathmandu. The facility includes classrooms, the college library, dorms as well as a medical clinic and pharmacy which provides healthcare services to the local community.

 

Duration

The Bachelor of Sowa Rigpa Medicine & Surgery degree program consists of:

4.5 years of academic studies & 1 year of clinical internship

The first four and a half years are divided into nine semesters, offering a comprehensive training in theoretical and practical studies of the Gyud Zhi (Four Medical Tantras). This will be complimented by courses on essential aspects of modern medicine, as well as other subjects such as Buddhism, Tibetan language and astrology.

Upon successful completion of the academic portion of the program, students will complete a one year clinical internship, with the first six months in a Sowa Rigpa clinic inside Nepal. The second six months of the internship can be completed in Nepal or at a Sowa Rigpa clinic abroad.

Scholarships

Many students receive scholarships in order to study at the Sowa Rigpa International College, organized by the Ngakmang Foundation and Sorig Khang Singapore. Prospective students are welcome to apply for funding, and donations are most welcome.
