MA in Bhot Buddhist Studies is included within the category of Core Buddhist Studies. The subjects are drawn on a wide range of vast and profound Mahayana Buddhist texts with special emphasis on texts written by ancient accomplished Buddhist masters from Nepal and India such as Nagarjuna, Asanga, Vasubandu, Shantideva, Dharmakirti, Atisha Dipamkarashrijnana and so on.

The curriculum fulfills the requirement of the Core Buddhist Studies with a wide range of disciplines such as Buddhist epistemology, Philosophy, Bhot Literature, classic and modern research methods, and other research principles. It emphasizes Buddhist basic texts viz. sutras and their commentaries and sub-commentaries. The curriculum is designed in such a way that students enrich themselves with a practical and comprehensive understanding of the core Buddhist subject matters.

Course Objectives:

The following are the main objectives of this curriculum:

  • To aware students with Buddhist epistemology, Philosophy, Bhot Literature, classic and modern research methods, and other research principles.
  • To enable the students to undertake an in-depth study of various disciplines of Buddhism equipped with classical and modern academic systems.
  • To introduce and enrich students/researchers with vast Buddhist literature comprising sutra, tantra their commentaries, and related materials.

Admission Criteria:

Students from any discipline having passed a Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent from any recognized university are eligible to apply for admission to a Master’s degree program. Eligible candidates may apply to LBU by filling out an application form available online. Admission to the program will take place on a Semester basis. To be eligible for the program, the candidate needs to appear for a written entrance examination followed by an interview. The maximum number of candidates for Master’s degree program in Buddhism yearly is set to 35

Teaching Methods:

The teaching methods consist of lectures, discussion sessions, oral and written presentations, audio-visual, term papers, seminar papers, book reviews and field visits. Each professor will follow a method of teaching and provide appropriate material at hand.

Assessment Methods:

Each course will be evaluated against 50 marks. Its marks are divided into 60:40 percent. The students should appear in the term end examination to be held by the University for 60 percent Marks. The internal evaluation will be based on constant monitoring of the supervisor and the teachers using specified tools. The class professor will be responsible for conducting the internal assessment. The pass marks in each subject will be 50 percent.

Note: Bhot Buddhist Studies Master thesis can be submitted in any of three languages Bhot, Nepali or English. In case, the thesis is written, the abstract and the last chapter should be translated either Nepali or English.
